Meghalaya is bounded on the North and East by the State of Assam and on the South and West by Bangladesh. The State is inhabited by three tribal groups namely the Khasis, the laintias and the Garos. All the three tribal groups follow the matrilineal system of society. The capital is situated at an altitude of 1496 meters above sea level.
